The practice of professionally-oriented teaching at English classes of Surgut State University is described in the article. The structure and content of the course for postgraduates of non-linguistic specialties is analyzed. Foreign language teaching in modern conditions is a priority direction and an essential component of professional activity of engineers. Particular attention is paid to such linguistic aspects as reading technical literature, writing activities and project work. The developed system of tasks is aimed at the activation of lexical and grammatical material.

Based on the analysis the authors have studied the definition of linguistic competence and the main stages of linguistic skills development in language teaching. The researchers have analyzed the main information and communication technologies, which make the teaching process more effective.
