«Potential Units of Verb Synthesis: Properties and Possibilities (on the Material of the Russian Verbs of Sound)»

The study identifies features of potential modifications and lacuna-forming modifiers involved in word-formation synthesis in the process of generating new verbs. The scientific novelty of this study is in the differentiated representation of lexical-semantic and morphological means (verbal modifiers) that are capable, on the one hand, of synthesizing a desired meaning (verbal modification) and, on the other hand, of producing lexical gaps (lacunae). As a result of analyzing the specific modifiers and modifications with respect to the lexical-semantic group of verbs of sound, the new products of synthesis (potential modifications) have been identified. The conditions for the appearance of lacunae and the role of the lacunae-forming modifiers are demonstrated. Through a special project at the Missouri S&T (USA) using the data from the Russian National Corpus, for the first time in lexicographic practice, novel modifications, previously considered non-existent, are introduced.

«Semantic Peculiarities of Lacunae – Modifications. The Concept of Lacunae Dictionary Creation (A Case Study of Russian Verbs of Sound)»

The article examines the insufficiently explored phenomenon in word-formation synthesis – the intra-linguistic affixal lacunae i.e. lexical gaps. The nature of lacunar units is described as a unique type of semantic modifications that display a similar structure, semantics, and characteristics. From the standpoint of derivative codification, the major lacunae groups are identified, analyzed, and mapped out based on their lexicographic properties. The glossary selection criteria for the experimental Lacunae – Modifications Dictionary are determined. Relying on the data from the Russian National Corpus, nearly 5,000 lacunae and sound verb modifications, combined, were researched using a web-scraping algorithm from a special project at Missouri S&T. The results of this study may serve as a foundational platform for this novel dictionary of affixal lexical gaps in the Russian language.

«Metaphorization of Nature in Anna Akhmatova's Lyric Poetry»

The primary goal of this paper is to study of the features of the linguistic representation of nature-related vocabulary in Anna Akhmatova’s lyric poems. The principles of compiling a frequency list of plant names are described, a classification of floristic vocabulary is given, and the lexical and semantic subgroup ‘trees’ is analyzed in detail. The specific features of the poet’s individual vision of floristic vocabulary are revealed, taking into account the author’s imagery explicating plant nominations in the literary text.

The article presents types, forms and functions of control of knowledge, abilities and skills of students as one of the most important element of educational process. Properly organized supervision and control, appropriative registering results of educational process on every stage of study help to reveal students’ individual successes and failures. And what is more, the training material which should be paid much attention becomes more transparent. Special attention is paid to the test as an effective type of testing task. The problem of control of knowledge, abilities and skill is a keystone in engineering education.

«The use of valency grammar and apparatus of case grammar to characterize the semantics of a derivative word»

The article discusses the valence concept as a phenomenon at an intersection of syntax and lexical semantics. The author also provides the types of valence and directions that help to study the valence theory in parallel with case grammar. The study aims to look into the reasons why the derivative word may be the reflection of underlying grammatical case meanings.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the educational and methodical complex «Perspective» of teaching aids in the Russian language by L.F. Klimanova, T.V. Babushkina. The work objective is to analyze the presence of the words of Orthodox culture and the form of lexical work with them. This article can be useful for improving lexical work in Russian language classes, which contributes to the formation of spiritual and moral guidelines of students.

«From soldier to marshal: the origin of the ranks of the French army»

This article discusses one of the fragments of the lexical system of the French language – the origin of terms denoting military ranks in the armed forces of France. The etymological analysis is carried out in close connection with the concrete historical situation which gave rise to the need of such language units. The author outlines the practical basis of the comparative study of the ways of lexical designation of ranks in the major European languages, including Russian.

«Cognitive comparative analysis of «civilization» and «culture» concepts in Russian and English languages»

The article considers content-based links between the concepts of «civilization» and «culture» in the Russian and English languages. The purpose of the study is comparing their content-based components in the lexical semantic fields of verbalization of the concepts under consideration in the Russian and English languages. The research employs the method of cognitive comparative analysis. The analysis of lexical and semantic composition reveals similarities and differences in their structuring in the English and Russian languages. According to the author the result of comparison suggests implications that the concepts under study are perceived differently by the representatives of the Russian and English cultures and contributes to the revelation of national peculiarity of conceptualization of cognate phenomena in the mentality of different peoples.

«The history of studying compound words of the Khakas language»

The article is devoted to studying the history of compound words in the Khakas language. The authors consider the Khakas linguistics to be poor in studies of compound words, including the history of studying. The results of the research can be used when studying morphology and syntax of the Turkic languages, particularly, the Khakass language.
